This piece is hands-down one of my personal favorites. It is about an amazing woman who loved her child unconditionally and taught that child that they could be exactly who they were. That woman was my Mom, and despite losing her in a tragic plane crash when I was still a teen, she remains my superhero, my guardian angel...my everything.
I love you, Mom. This one's for you.

A HERO IN MY EYES
I often sit alone and think
Reflect on life's mistakes
So many broken promises
And so much still at stake
I wish I could rewind the clock
Control the flow of time
There's one thing that I would change
To me the greatest crime
A child needs their mother's love
A bond that shouldn't break
When that connection shatters
There's no greater heartache
My mother knew the way I was
My secrets would unfurl
She wasn't fazed when I said
Your boy's actually a girl
When you play with Moms makeup
The mess you leave stands out
Instead of being angry
When evidence was all about
My mom told me it's ok
Your perfect as you are
My love is unconditional
My daughter is a star
Hearing that was wonderful
The greatest gift she gave
Then she did my makeup
Said 'my little girl is brave'
Then one day my world collapsed
And all came crashing down
Tragedy destroyed my life
From sorrow, I would drown
My mom did a special job
Was a medivac nurse
How could we have ever known
Her work would be her curse
She left on a flight one day
Said be back in a flash
How could any of us know
That her plane would crash
I'll never forget that day
Something broke in me
My heart has been empty since
Why won't God hear my plea
My mom was amazing
Said I can be anything
Don't let others stop you
Even when their words might sting
Even though it took me years
That wisdom now will show
I'm a strong Transwoman
My mom would be proud to know
Even though she's not here
And there's pain I can't disguise
I still love her more than anything
She's a hero in my eyes.
